HFI installs solar power systems in seven Barangay Health Stations in Samar and Eastern Samar.
To ensure the uninterrupted delivery of primary healthcare services in the Barangay Health Stations (BHS) during typhoons and other disasters, Health Futures Foundation, Inc. (HFI), in partnership with Direct Relief, launched its Solarizing Alay sa Ginhawa at Kalusugan (ALAGA KA) BHS in Samar and Eastern Samar initiative. The project aims to provide a continuous electricity source in the BHS for at least three (3) days during typhoons, other disasters and medical emergencies. The initiative also responds to the call of sustaining climate-resilient Barangay Health Stations in disaster-prone communities.
In October 2023, HFI was able to install solar power systems in five (5) initial ALAGA KA areas in Eastern Samar namely in the barangays of Asgad, Balud, Burak and Cantomoja in Salcedo and Barangay Cagdara-o in Guiuan. In March 2024, HFI installed solar power systems in two (2) additional ALAGA KA BHS in the municipality of Marabut, Samar namely the barangays of Tag-alag and Tinabanan.
The installed solar power system in the Barangay Health Stations includes three roof solar panels, a portable power station, a smart home panel, and a stand-alone generator. It has an offgrid setup, which serves as the primary electricity source in the BHS with a total capacity of up to 3,600 watts of battery energy storage system. Members of the communities were also oriented and trained on the basic operations, maintenance and troubleshooting of the installed power systems.
The solar power initiative will benefit around 5,500 people from the seven (7) barangays in the provinces of Eastern Samar and Samar.
