The former HFI-OPTEAM scholar is now in her first year of medical studies!
After earning her Midwifery and Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from the UP Manila School of Health Sciences in Koronadal, South Cotabato in 2016, Blaan scholar Lady Faith Juli is now pursuing a path in medicine as a first-year medical student at the UP Manila School of Health Sciences in Palo, Leyte.
Lady Faith, a proud member of the Blaan Tribe of Polomolok, South Cotabato is among HFI and OPTEAM’s* Indigenous People (IP) scholars who took up Midwifery and Nursing through the Ladderized Program offered by the university. Before she entered medical school, Lady Faith worked as a full-time midwife at the Polomolok Municipal Lying-in and then as one of the community nurses assigned to the ALAGA KA Birthing Home in Brgy. Landan, Polomolok where she was born and raised.
Being part of a marginalized sector in the country, life for Lady Faith and other Blaan youth has not been easy. With limited resources and opportunities provided for the IP communities, students have to double their efforts for a chance to pursue and finish higher education.
However, with Lady Faith’s grit and determination, along with the support from her tribe, she is now a step closer to finally achieving her dream of becoming a doctor. This is a testament especially for the youth of the Blaan tribe that anything is possible, as long as you put your heart, focus, and passion into your goal.
Once finished with her medical studies, Lady Faith will return to South Cotabato to serve her tribe.
